Summary / Abstract (Note) | The present anthropogenetic study was conducted to investigate cognitive impairment and depression in relation to physique, nutritional status, somatometric variables, selected genetic polymorphism and gene-gene interaction in a cross-sectional sample of Jat community from Palwal District of Haryana. 808 participants, aged 30-70 years, were recruited, after taking informed written consent and their socio-demographic, anthropometric, genetic, depression and cognitive status was assessed employing standard protocols. In the present sample, depression (31.1%) and cognitive impairment (CI) (more than 50%) was found to be relatively higher in comparison to other Indian studies, with higher prevalence among females as compared to males.Jat population was found to be mesomorphic endomorph. A slight decrease in endomorphy and increase in ectomorphy was noticed with advancing age. Endomorphy was found to be more prevalent among individuals having CI and depression. But reverse association was found of selected somatometric variables with CI and depression indicating the cause and effect relationship of obesity and mental disabilities. GG genotype of HTR1B gene polymorphism was found to pose statistically significant increased risk for mild CI and moderate/severe depression. C allele and CC genotype of NRG1 gene polymorphism were found to pose an increased risk for mild depression. Also gene- gene interactions of HTR1B and NRGI gene polymorphisms were found to be associated with cognitive impairment as well as depression. In conclusion, to control the risk of mental conditions, management and treatment strategies should be chalked out keeping in view the genetic architecture of an individual along with socio- demographic and environmental variables. newline newline newline newline newline |
